Welcome to the Wingate Scholarships website
IMPORTANT NOTICE: CESSATION OF SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME
For the last 23 Years Wingate Scholarships have been awarded annually to outstanding individuals seeking financial support for creative or original work of intellectual, scientific, social or environmental value and to musicians for advanced training.
However, we profoundly regret that the current economic situation has forced us to discontinue the Scholarships scheme with immediate effect. Accordingly, the 2012 Round has had to be cancelled.
Applicants and would-be applicants will appreciate that this decision has been taken only with the greatest reluctance and after much debate. We apologize to all those individuals, and their supporting referees, who have already applied for scholarships or were about to do so before the 1 February 2012 closing date, for the lateness of this notification.
The Foundation will be exploring options for how it can continue to support scholarly activity in the future. Further news will be posted on the Foundation's website at www.wingatefoundation.org.uk, in due course.
In the meantime, the Foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have assisted in assessing applications, undertaking interviews and organising a scheme which has enabled some 1000 special individuals to receive awards since the scheme began in 1988.

Applicants need to be at least 24 and there is no upper age limit. The Scholarship Committee welcomes applications from mature candidates and those from non-traditional academic backgrounds, as well as those who have had to overcome difficult financial or social circumstances. They must be citizens of the UK, the Commonwealth, Israel or Ireland, or citizens of Council of Europe member countries (provided they have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least 3 years).
Awards are offered for independent research in most subjects, and aim to provide funding for multi-disciplinary projects that may not fall into any of the conventional funding categories. The scholarships are designed to help with the costs of a specific project lasting up to three years. The maximum award for one year is £10,000 (although the trustees are seldom able to provide this amount). To avoid disappointment, only individuals who can clearly demonstrate they meet the criteria should consider applying. In 2011 out of 228 eligible applications received, 78 candidates were interviewed and 39 awards were given.
