Eligibility and Funding Criteria 2010
Please note the 2010 funding programme is now closed to new applications. The 2011 programme will open in October 2010.
Before completing an application to the Wingate Scholarships Scheme applicants are strongly advised to check through the following steps to ensure that they and their project are eligible to apply and are able to meet the assessment criteria. This page is available to download as pdf click here.
Step 1 - Applicant EligibilityTo be eligible to apply, applicants must be:
- Resident and contactable (by post) in the United Kingdom during the period of application (October - July). Applications will be only be accepted if submitted from a valid UK address. This applies to all candidates.
- Citizens of the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth or former Commonwealth country, Ireland or Israel, or
- Citizens of an EU or Council of Europe member country (see Useful Links)- if they will have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years on 1 September 2010
- 24 years of age or over on 1 September 2010 (there is no upper age limit)
- Able to provide evidence of real financial need
Step 2 - Project Eligibility
We offer funding opportunities for:
- Independent Research, in most subjects - see Subject Classifications 2010
- Post-Doctoral Studies
- Fieldwork (associated with Independent Research, Post-Doctoral studies or completing a PhD)
- Music (including composition, musicology and advanced training for performing musicians)
- Craft and Design Research Projects
We do not offer funding opportunities for:
- Doctoral Studies (except for costs to be met in or after the final year of a PhD, which are associated with its completion, extension or publication).
Please note this is a change from previous years - and means no awards for undertaking PhDs or DPhils as such, only for additional costs as set out above. - Taught Courses (up to and including Master's degrees, except in Music)
- Medical Research (except for innovative multi-disciplinary projects not eligible for funding from the major medical research funding bodies)
- Performing Arts (except for Music - see above)
- Courses leading to Professional Qualifications or Electives
- Courses at Drama, Art or Business Colleges
- Fine Art or Fine Art Photography
Step 3 - Assessment Criteria
For eligible applications which meet the criteria in steps 1 and 2, the Scholarships Selection Panels will use the following criteria for assessing the quality of applications. Please be sure you will have been able to meet these criteria before proceeding with your application.
- Will undertake a project with the potential markedly to benefit humanity, either collectively or in a specific community (by way of health, wealth or personal fulfilment).
- Wish to pursue a project which has the potential to make a radical impact on the applicant's future work and/or life direction.
- Seek to undertake a project requiring the effective application of an innovative multi-disciplinary approach
- Face unusual hardship or have overcome significant personal difficulties
- Are unable to access financial support from traditional funding sources for reasons of residency, citizenship or other legal requirements
In addition successful applicants must be able to meet both of the following two criteria: - Show clear evidence of outstanding ability, promise or creative attainment in one or more of the eligible subject areas
- Seek to undertake or to complete a project of outstanding originality, creativity and quality, for which they can demonstrate they have the necessary motivation and ability.
